Internal and External Peace: Seek Peace and Purity.

Strive for Peace.

The Call to Peace and Holiness

Hebrews 12:14 (ESV) reminds us: “Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord.” This verse is both a challenge and an invitation. It calls us to pursue peace not only in our relationships with others but also within ourselves. True peace is not passive; it requires effort, humility, and a willingness to let go of pride and resentment.

When Others Cause Trouble

We all know the sting of conflict. Sometimes people hurt us intentionally, other times unintentionally. But here’s the harder truth: we may also be the ones causing trouble - for ourselves, for others, or even by resisting God’s guidance. Recognizing this is the first step toward healing and reconciliation.

The Example of Jesus

Jesus endured emotional, physical, and spiritual suffering because of others. He was mocked, betrayed, and crucified. Yet He remained pure. He did not retaliate in anger or call down destruction on His enemies. Instead, He offered peace - even in His darkest hour. His response shows us that peace is not the absence of struggle but the presence of holiness in the midst of it.

Finding Internal Peace

  • Self-reflection: Ask yourself if unresolved anger or guilt is disturbing your inner calm.

  • Prayer and meditation: These practices help align your heart with God’s will.

  • Forgiveness: Letting go of grudges frees you from emotional chains.

Internal peace begins when we stop fighting battles within ourselves and surrender to God’s grace.

Living in External Peace

  • Practice empathy: Try to understand others before judging them.

  • Choose kindness: Small acts of love can diffuse tension.

  • Seek reconciliation: When possible, mend broken relationships instead of ignoring them.

External peace is about how we interact with the world. It’s not always easy, but it reflects Christ’s love when we choose harmony over hostility.

Purity and Peace Go Hand in Hand

Peace without purity is fragile. Holiness strengthens peace because it roots our actions in God’s truth. When we strive for purity in thought, word, and deed, we naturally foster peace around us. The two are inseparable - one sustains the other.

Final Reflection

Peace is not simply a feeling; it is a way of living. By following Jesus’ example, we can cultivate both internal calm and external harmony. Hebrews 12:14 is more than a command - it is a promise that when we pursue peace and holiness, we draw closer to God and reflect His light in the world.
