The Danger of Pride: A Biblical Reflection.

Pride is an Obstruction.

Pride is one of the most insidious dangers warned against in Scripture. It is more than confidence - it is an inflated sense of self-importance that blinds us to our dependence on God and distorts our relationships with others. The Bible consistently portrays pride as a pathway to downfall, separation from God, and spiritual ruin.

Pride Defined

At its root, pride is rebellion. It elevates the self above God, dismisses humility, and often manifests as arrogance, boasting, or self-reliance. Proverbs 16:18 reminds us: “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Pride is not simply a weakness - it is a spiritual danger that leads to collapse.

Biblical Examples of Pride

  • Lucifer’s Fall: Once radiant in glory, Lucifer’s prideful desire to be equal with God led to his expulsion from heaven. His fall illustrates how pride corrupts even the most exalted beings.

  • King Nebuchadnezzar: The Babylonian king boasted of his power and majesty, forgetting that all authority comes from God. God humbled him, driving him into madness until he acknowledged divine sovereignty (Daniel 4).

  • The Pharisees: Their pride in religious knowledge and status blinded them to the truth of Jesus’ teachings. Pride hardened their hearts and prevented them from recognizing the Messiah standing before them.

These examples serve as warnings: pride is not harmless - it is destructive.

Why Pride Is Dangerous

  • It separates us from God: Pride convinces us we don’t need Him.

  • It damages relationships: Pride breeds conflict, resentment, and division.

  • It blinds us to truth: Pride prevents us from seeing our faults and receiving correction.

The Call to Humility

The antidote to pride is humility. Humility is not weakness - it is strength under God’s authority. It acknowledges that every gift, talent, and success comes from Him. Jesus modelled humility, washing His disciples’ feet and teaching: “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12).

Living a Humble Life

Rejecting pride means embracing gratitude, service, and dependence on God. It means recognizing that our worth is not in our achievements but in Christ. Humility opens the door to grace, while pride shuts it firmly.

Closing Prayer

Lord, guard my heart against pride. Teach me to walk humbly before You, to serve others with love, and to acknowledge that all I have comes from Your hand. May I never exalt myself above You but instead live in gratitude and submission to Your will. Amen.

Be Safe and God Bless.
