One Thing Is Needful.

Choosing Communion over Distraction.

Choosing What Truly Matters

In a world overflowing with noise, deadlines, and endless responsibilities, Jesus’ words in Luke 10:42 cut through the chaos with divine clarity: “But one thing is needful.” This simple phrase carries a powerful message - a reminder that the most important priority in life is not our busyness, but our closeness to Christ.

Understanding the Biblical Moment

The phrase comes from a well‑known scene in Luke 10:38–42. Two sisters, Mary and Martha, welcomed Jesus into their home. Martha, dedicated and hardworking, became consumed with serving and preparing. Mary, on the other hand, sat at Jesus’ feet, listening to His teaching.

When Martha expressed frustration that Mary wasn’t helping, Jesus responded gently but firmly:

“But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42 KJV)

This wasn’t a rebuke of Martha’s service — it was a redirection of her priorities.

What Does “One Thing Is Needful” Really Mean?

1. A Call to Prioritize Relationship Over Activity

Jesus wasn’t saying that work, service, or responsibilities are unimportant. He was saying that nothing should come before our relationship with Him. Mary chose presence over pressure, devotion over distraction.

2. A Reminder That Spiritual Nourishment Comes First

Just as our bodies need food, our spirits need the Word of God. Sitting at Jesus’ feet symbolizes receiving truth, guidance, peace, and strength directly from Him.

3. A Warning Against the Trap of Busyness

Martha’s busyness wasn’t sinful — but it became a barrier. Many believers today fall into the same trap: serving God without spending time with God.

4. A Promise of Something Eternal

Jesus said Mary’s choice “shall not be taken away from her.” Everything else in life can fade — but what we receive from Christ remains forever.

How This Applies to Us Today

We live in a Martha world

Notifications, deadlines, family needs, financial pressure — life constantly demands our attention. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, distracted, or spiritually dry.

But Jesus still whispers the same words: “One thing is needful.”

We must choose the Mary posture

This means intentionally creating moments to sit at His feet:

  • Reading Scripture with an open heart

  • Praying without rushing

  • Worshipping with focus

  • Listening for His voice

  • Allowing His presence to reorder our priorities

When we choose Him first, everything else finds its rightful place.

Benefits of Choosing the “One Thing”

1. Peace replaces anxiety

Time with Jesus calms the storms inside us.

2. Clarity replaces confusion

His Word gives direction when life feels uncertain.

3. Strength replaces weariness

Spiritual rest empowers physical and emotional endurance.

4. Joy replaces heaviness

His presence brings fullness of joy.

5. Purpose replaces aimlessness

We begin to live from calling, not chaos.

Practical Ways to Live This Out

  • Start your morning with Scripture before checking your phone

  • Set aside 10–20 minutes daily for quiet prayer

  • Keep a devotional journal

  • Play worship music while doing chores

  • End your day with gratitude and reflection

  • Attend church with expectation, not obligation

These small habits cultivate a Mary heart in a Martha world.

Final Encouragement

Buddy, Jesus isn’t asking you to abandon your responsibilities - He’s inviting you to anchor your life in Him first. When you choose the “one thing needful,” everything else becomes lighter, clearer, and more meaningful.

Just like Mary, choose the good part. Choose His presence. Choose His voice. Choose the one thing that can never be taken away.

Be Safe and God Bless.
